We had a lot of fun putting together the Random issue for this month, who wouldn’t love reading about the randomness of your music selections, daydreaming, unusual Peoria landmarks and PechaKucha! Also check out our reader submitted music and movie reviews and even a recipe for a simply delicious summer sangria concocted by a Numéro fan. We believe in local and we want to here from you–tell us what you’d love to see in Numéro!

Earth Day is an opportunity for all of us to take a collective stance with our appreciation of the planet and all living things upon it. Like the other Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or any other 24 hour celebration it will pass without notice for the majority of the 7 billion potential participants who could recognize it but are too busy merely surviving their own difficulties and problems. But even as every living being will have a uniquely different experience on April 22, there will be one unifying action that everybody all over the world will take the time to do. Drink water.

We don’t think about it. We don’t argue it. We do it because we must. It is the only thing we all agree upon and we need to give it more of our attention and consideration in order for us to continue enjoying what it offers us. Life.

The simple act of drinking water floods our bodies with the life -giving substance that has been recycled trillions of times over every square inch of our planet, and there are many people who believe with their hearts that the act of drinking water is an act of love that connects us all.

Water is a gift that nourishes when shared.
Share water. Share Life.

HELP COMMON PLACE receive up to $50,000 in grant funds from Starbucks!

Common Place Family Learning Center has been chosen to receive a grant from the Starbucks Foundation: The VoteGiveGrow Grant is part of a nationwide program through which the Starbucks Foundation distributes $4 million dollars to over 120 organizations nationwide.  Four grants will be given in each state to organizations selected by Starbucks for the work these organizations do to help solve the unique needs of their communities.  Grants range from $5,000 to $50,000.

The size of the grant each nonprofit receives is determined by weekly online voting.  The total votes cast will determine the final ranking of organizations within your region.  The top-ranking organization (that is the one with the most votes during April) will receive the largest grant, with organizations placing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th receiving smaller grants.

COMMON PLACE IS THE ONLY DOWNSTATE ILLINOIS ORGANIZATION CHOSEN FOR A GRANT!

Public voting begins NOW, and remember your vote will determine the amount of the grant.

To help Common Place go to…

1. www.votegivegrow.com

2. Register your Community Card or Starbucks Card

3. Search for Common Place under “Find a Community” and “Illinois”

4. Vote once each week during the month of April

Common Place Family Learning Center, located on the south side of Peoria, strives to eliminate causes of poverty and other social injustices, primarily through education.  Every year approximately 5,000 individuals seek help from Common Place through adult literacy/GED instruction, youth after-school and summer academics, emergency food pantry, and family learning activities.  Grant money received will benefit Common Place’s literacy programs.
